Boss Sounds is a music management and marketing/PR company, based in New York. Their clients include major record labels, entertainment brands and heritage artists. Bunbury Creative was commissioned to develop a new logo and identity for the burgeoning brand.
The brief in short, was to create something that was visually synonymous with music, completely ownable, premium, and responsive for online/offline usage. The start point for the creative, was looking at iconic music marks such as the Blue Note Records logo. We wanted to create something that had the potential to become iconic in it’s own right, but not necessarily dated or retro. It needed enough contemporary energy to sit alongside partner and client logos, and on the whole the identity should place the company as though it deserved to be there – a new player in the music landscape.
Over the course of several weeks dozens of concepts were penned, and a few routes developed further. In each case applications of the new brand were generated placing the marks ‘in situ’. Eventually we hit upon an idea, where the client asked us to try joining the ‘b’ and ‘d’ as a double quaver. The strength in this concept, is the visual association is completely unique to Boss Sounds. Many contemporary music-orientated logos are fairly interchangeable, so the real value of the process is creating something completely ownable for the client.
This idea was then refined, using a heavier typeface and stronger lines. Having it on a slant created upward energy. The logo should be heavy enough to radiate gravitas, and preserve legibility on tablet and mobile devices, but still display a certain elegance. The lowercase type works both as a visual device for the quaver, and also keeps the brand approachable and accessible. The final iteration of the logo was tweaked further, dropping all unnecessary embellishments, and simplifying the shape. It is this simplicity that personifies a brand, as there’s real confidence in standing behind an unfussy mark.
From there, a basic colour palette was developed. Orange was the client’s request, so we found a good strong option that wasn’t too garish, and gave a secondary blue for alternative use. The final mark is energetic, vibrant, versatile and professional – qualities all imbued from working with Boss Sounds.
