“Americana” is the thirty-fourth studio album by the legendary Neil Young. In support of the release, Warner Music approached me to develop posters and press ads for a marketing campaign. The campaign needed to reflect the album artwork, but as the original artwork was unavailable to use much of it would need to be recreated, based on the overall concept.
The fixed elements for the poster upon brief were the header strip with the handwriting, the flag-coloured text, and the central image, all of which came from the album art. I then digitally began to extend the edges of the packshot supplied by the client, and using textures and brushes could extend the canvas out. I then created elements to match the poster, which would house the text.
As no campaign guidelines had been established, I selected a font that I think worked with the overall aged style. However the typography needed to be upfront, bold, and legible from distance so rather than using a purely authentic ‘Western’ font I went with a heavier, simpler option.
