Prince The Musical Poster Concept

The Guardian is a British national daily newspaper, and periodically they encourage readers to particpate in ‘assignments’ based on articles. In this case the article regarded stage musicals based on bands and singers. The challenge was to create a musical and poster based on a band/artist of the reader’s choosing. Always up for a challenge I gave it a go, and chose Prince. With live dates in 2014 and rumours of a headline slot at Glastonbury, a Prince musical could well happen…
My concept dealt with Prince’s estrangement from his record label, some years ago. During this period the artist was given to appearing in public with the word ‘SLAVE’ written on his cheek. As my fictional musical would focus on this situation – an artists’ struggle for control and self-determination – I arrived at the visual concept fairly quickly. The main illustration is a digital portrait, and the heavy black outline calls to mind stained-glass windows and religious art – the duality of religion and sensuality being a prevalent theme in Prince’s music.
