I was approached by music management company OneFifteen, to generate a brand identity, supporting marketing materials, and sleeve design for an English band from their roster by the name of Scoundrels, now signed to Blue Horizon. They released their debut album in 2011. The brief was to create a logo and a visual language that reflected the band’s sound and positioning, a fusion of English and American styles in the rock tradition of the ‘British blues band’. The logo needed to be timeless and iconic, representing both the heritage and contemporary values of the music. My approach was based around graphic representations of the combination of English and American sounds.
The concept for the logo illustration itself was inspired by the band, who had a concept in mind of combining two visual icons representative of the band’s experience. The bulldog was distinctly British, and the Alligator represented the backwoods of an ‘Americana’ ideal. The logotype itself is a combination of two typefaces, one distinctly American, the other very English. The logo is now fondly referred to as the ‘Allidog’. I developed a set of brand guidelines, art directed several illustrations, developed in conjunction with Ben Price from Symetria and began to apply the styling to this to the promo, singles and album, and a wide range of marketing materials both offline and online.
